Teacher training and photos

March 23, 2011: BODHI funded 11 days of training and all associated costs (total: USD/AUD 3200) for 33 YBS-associated teachers and principals at Loreto College in Kolkata. Sister Cyril says:

'They just left last night by train and we gave them the use of our bus. They packed themselves in and were extremely happy. We have rarely had such a good and cooperative group. Everyone seemed to take to the training like ducks to water ... We would be very happy to have them back as they were so eager to learn and so ready to take in whatever we could give them. They have had training only up as far as Class I ... Now if they come back to us we could do Class II, III and IV and then a little later on the senior school level.'

 

 


 

Youth Buddhist Society

Education for village children where there is no state school

 

Youth Buddhist Society (YBS)-associated schools in Uttar Pradesh, India, educate about 3700 poor children, boys & girls, Hindus & Buddhists.

The schools are built where there is no state school and funded by contributions from farmers and villagers.

The teachers are not fully qualified, although they have university degrees. Their average salary is INR2,000 per month (state teachers receive INR10,000). There are few reference books, though some students have exercise books. The rooms are very simple (see above) and sometimes contain two classes, with two teachers in one room. Most students sit on the floor. This is literally a
