Thank you

Dr Bryan West, Chris Gribble & their families are making this project possible.

Aim

To provide holistic and comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services to underprivileged young people (aged 24 years old and younger).

Objectives

* To provide sex education, counseling and basic sexual and reproductive health services: physical examination, screening for HIV and other sexual transmitted infections (STIs), primary medical treatment for STIs, family planning materials including condoms and contraceptive pills.

* To be self-sustaining enough after the first year of operation to be able to seek at least half of BODHI's initial funding amount elsewhere.

A model for other communities?

We are hoping that this project will provide a model for similar work with adolescent youths for other communities, possibly in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh and Northeast India. BODHI Adviser Ms Kabita Chakma will be meeting with Project Director Arunrat Tangmunkongvorakul in Chiang Mai in early December, 2011, to explore possibilities.

Sexual health for underprivileged youth in Northern Thailand

Thai youth face sexual health crisis. Details & budget in Project Proposal link below

In early January 2012 a new BODHI project will begin: 'Comprehensive Sexual and Reproductive Health Program for Underprivileged Young People in Northern Thailand'.

Young people aged 15-24 years old have become one of the major risk groups for HIV and other STIs. About 7% of Thai women aged 15-19 years old already have children, and rates of teenage pregnancy and unplanned pregnancy are seriously elevated. Consequently, rates of abortion and serious post-abortion complications have increased; the real magnitude of this problem is underestimated as abortion in Thailand is illegal.

Most of the programs that the Thai Government has initiated to address these problems target in-school adolescents. BODHI's project targets youth who are out of the reach of the traditional education system that provides these services. Youth can be ethnic minorities, migrants, street children and the very poor. Estimates put the number affected at around 1,000 disadvantaged youths. We hope to reach about 150 young people in the first year.

The Project Leader of BODHI's local partner is Arunrat Tangmunkongvorakul, RN, PhD. She has much experience in this area, in which she has published extensively, as well as a long connection with the National Centre for Epiedmiology and Population Health at Australian National University.

The team consists of a medical doctor, nurse, counselor and social worker, who will see youths at clinics in Chiang Mai and Lamphun, about 30 kilometres away. They will provide services once a week at either one of the two clinics, or as appointed for approximately 4 days per month overall, or 2 days per month in each clinic. They will also provide individual counseling (8 days per month) and informal group education sessions (2 sessions per month).
