Peace & security
Widening gap between rich & poor

Objectives

To establish student-lead peer-education programs in three villages, to serve as a model and catalyst for programs in other communities.

To develop the programs using a community-based participatory approach which employs and helps enhance the community’s own social capital, thereby helping insure the programs’ sustainability.

To provide training and other services to several hundred girls between the ages of 12-15, that will potentially positively impact a significant number of families in the villages, and contribute measurably to community health and well-being.

Reproductive & academic education for Thai border girls

'It is essential that we fight the exodus of good students, faculty and health care workers to Bangkok and other major urban centers.' Prof Bruce Wilcox

2010. BODHI & local partner begin 3-year project with Thai border girls for academic achievement & reproductive health.

Background

Chiang Rai, the northernmnost province of Thailand, borders Myanmar/Burma and Laos. It is part of the drug-smuggling Golden Triangle in which some clans still live a village life in bamboo houses.

Foreground

BODHI is working with Global Health Group International on a 3-year project to foster academic achievement and teach reproductive health. The project will help 200-300 girls directly and more than one thousand indirectly. The cost is $10,000 per year.

Primary program personnel are natives of the rural Chiang Rai villages that will be the beneficiaries of the project and have extensive first-hand experience in empowering girls.

Initially, the local team will find and select candidates and interact with the family, which includes intervening in various problems affecting a child’s educational opportunity: the other costs necessary to get and keep children in school in addition to direct school costs such as tuition, books and uniforms.
