We want to hear from you

Mr Paritosh Chakma, Editor of The Chakma Voice a bi-monthly newsletter of the Mizoram Chakma Development Forum (MCDF), writes from Delhi: Thank you for sending us the BODHI Times December 2011 issue. Mizoram Chakma Development Forum (MCDF) is very fond of the BODHI Times, and would like to continue receiving it.

Dec 2010. Prof John Guillebaud, BODHI Adviser, writes from the UK: As usual I appreciated reading the latest BODHI Times. Re the low funding for preventive med/public health, I would like to point out with regard to the second of Hemenway’s four reasons, that I used to get more whisky than I could drink from grateful patients in Obstetrics or my Fertility Clinic (which are examples of curative medicine); but I have never had a single bottle from someone because they did NOT have a baby through family planning, which is an important eg of preventive medicine ... NOR of course for an ovarian cancer a woman didn't get through that definite but often forgotten benefit of hormonal contraception, since they don't know who they are!

Mr Paritosh Chakma, Editor of The Chakma Voice a bi-monthly newsletter of the Mizoram Chakma Development Forum (MCDF), writes from NE India: Thank you so much for adding Mizoram Chakma Development Forum (MCDF) to BODHI's Links page. We believe this will encourage us to work with more determination and zeal. We thank all the staff of BODHI for being so kind to us.

Prof Solomon Benatar, BODHI's Ethical Adviser, has sent a provocative article he wrote, "Why development aid hasn't eased poverty" (33KB), in which he reflects upon such questions as, Does development aid alleviate poverty? and Is development aid based upon flawed assumptions? Reprinted with permission from Cape Times.

I am so happy to see our creche children’s photos, news and report. I showed them to our creche workers and the children’s parents, and they were so happy. Thank you once again for all the help you are giving to our projects.

Dr Shanti Raman, Community Adviser

I was attracted by BODHI initially because of its name. Coming from India, I was pleased to see development and health put in the context of ‘insight’. It is clear that improving the health of the most disadvantaged populations begins a long way before health services. It begins with understanding the nature of the problem, the source of inequity, empowerment, women’s status in society, the cultural beliefs and spiritual practices that operate to keep that community going, and the global forces that operate to maintain the state of disadvantage.

Letter from the late Sir John Crofton, June 2006
