BODHI Activities

2010

Start the decade off right by becoming one of the "Global Voices for Peace in the CHT" (Chittagong Hill Tracts, Bangladesh).

January. This campaign began during the week of the International Human Rights Day (10th December 2009). It aims to encourage the Prime Minister of Bangladesh to implement the CHT Peace Accord which her government signed 12 years ago with the indigenous peoples of the CHT.

BODHI Community Adviser Kabita Chakma says, "We cordially seek your endorsement in the campaign “Global Voices for Peace in the CHT” calling for full implementation of the CHT Peace Accord signed on 2 December 1997. Many distinguished human rights activists, including Nobel Peace Laureate Mairead Corrigan Maguire, are endorsing the campaign. In Australia, Senator Bob Brown and two Labor MPs, including Janelle Saffin, have endorsed the campaign with a peace message."

New BODHI Human Rights Committee member keen on health & human rights
September. We welcome Dr Sonal Singh to the BODHI Human Rights Committee. Dr Singh is interested in health and human rights issues of marginalised communities, such as those in the CHT (see below). He works at Johns Hopkins University in the U.S. Dr Singh is in Nepal this month and will report back to us. Watch this space!

Drug addiction in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), Bangladesh
August. We see this not only an incipient public health issue (eg, HIV/AIDs and Hepatitis C down the line) but also a human rights one. BODHI is committed to continuing to draw the attention of the relevant health experts to this problem, and to working towards solutions.

Follow-up of meeting with Australian parliamentarians
February. Kabita Chakma has submitted a follow-up of the CHT Indigenous Jumma Association Australia meeting (pdf 43KB) with Hon Bob McMullan MP and Margaret Watt Chief of Staff.
