2011. Bear team sees Gobi bear in the wild

Odbayar Tumendemberel writes from Mongolia: 'The Gobi Bear Research Team went to Gobi in May, 2011. It was a successful trip. We saw a Gobi bear in the wild. That was so lucky that we observed the bear for 4 hours. The first time we saw him, he was sleeping close to water. Then he woke up and went to feeder site lazily. Before sunset, the bear went to a mountain.

'There were 19 people from International Bear Association and Management, National Geographic, Biology Institute of Mongolian Academy of Sciences, Mongolian Ministry of Nature, Environment and Tourism and Great Gobi Strictly Protected Area. That 2 people from National Geographic and a hydrologist from USA joined our trip was a new thing for our work. We captured 2 Gobi bears, a female and a male. The female bear whose name is "Borte" was recaptured this year. We collared the bears and got genetic samples.'
