adult men and women.

of the Jaintia Hills.
Project
Description
There
are still many villages in the Jaintia hills District of Meghalaya,India,
where the literacy rate is barely 12%. Even children have to bear
the burden of contributing to the family income. What may look abnormal
in other parts of the world is the norm here.
Mupyut's
1600 people speak a dialect closely linked to the Monkhmer linguistic
group. Although only 15 kms from the District Headquarters. Jowai
was selected because of its backward condition and because it is close
to the highway.
Research
objectives & expected outputs
This
is not a research project but an educational one. It can be research
in the sense that the results of this project can be used as a pilot
for other projects. The single objective at present is to aim at increasing
the literacy level to at least 25% in the first year. The goal is
mainly for adults but looking at the extreme condition of the community,
even younger ones may be accommodated.
There
is only one primary level school operating here. That also is not
regular. There is a church, but 90% of the people are mostly engaged
in the farming of paddy and other basic food items.
Commencement
date: Project started with one teacher 1st of June
2003. First aim is to complete one year.
Evaluation:
It will be effective because there is a desire amongst the people
to learn and know how to read and write. Once the teacher is committed,
it will be effective. Evaluation will be done by supervisors once
a month.
